Shockwave Therapy in London

Shockwave therapy, formally extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT, is a non-surgical treatment for stubborn tendon and muscle pain. A handheld applicator delivers acoustic pressure waves into the painful tissue, which increases local blood flow, stimulates the cells that repair collagen, and calms the nerve endings that keep a chronic injury sore. It is one of the best-researched options for tendon problems that have not settled with rest and standard physiotherapy.

At Halcyon Medispa in Marylebone the treatment is delivered by Anil Daniel Prasad, a chartered sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapist with more than twenty years of clinical experience. Both focused high-energy shockwave and radial pressure wave are available, and the choice between them is made for you: deeper tendon insertions respond to focused waves, while broader, more superficial tissue does better with radial.

What Shockwave Therapy Treats

Shockwave therapy is used for chronic tendon and soft-tissue problems, most of them familiar to anyone who runs, lifts, plays racquet sports, or simply spends long days on their feet: plantar fasciitis and heel pain, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee), tennis and golfer's elbow, calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder, greater trochanteric pain syndrome (pain over the outside of the hip), proximal hamstring and adductor tendinopathy, and shin splints. It also helps release stubborn trigger points and chronic muscle or ligament injuries that have stopped responding to massage and stretching.

The common thread is time: these conditions respond best to shockwave once they have been present for some months and the tissue has stalled in a poor state of repair. Your assessment establishes whether the diagnosis fits and whether shockwave is the right tool before any treatment is booked.

What a Session Is Like

Every course starts with an assessment: history, movement testing, and palpation to confirm exactly which tissue is driving the pain. Treatment itself is simple. Gel is applied over the area, the applicator is placed against the skin, and a few thousand pulses are delivered over several minutes. It feels like a firm, rapid tapping that becomes a dull ache over the sore spot; the intensity is adjusted to stay firmly tolerable, and no anaesthetic is needed or used.

A session takes around twenty to thirty minutes including check-in on your progress. You walk out and carry on with your day. The area may feel warm, slightly sore, or occasionally show mild redness or bruising for a day or two.

Aftercare and Results

Two things matter after each session. First, avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen: shockwave works by provoking a controlled healing response, and anti-inflammatories blunt exactly that. Simple paracetamol is fine if you need it. Second, follow the graded exercise plan you are given. Shockwave switches the healing back on; the loading programme is what rebuilds the tendon's strength, and the combination is what the research supports.

Keep training modified rather than stopped: most people continue normal daily activity throughout, easing off high-load sport for around forty-eight hours after each session. Improvement usually builds week on week across the course, and the full regenerative effect continues for eight to twelve weeks after the final session.
