A chemical peel is a professional exfoliating treatment in which a solution of acids is applied to the skin for a set time and then neutralised, lifting away damaged surface cells so that smoother, clearer skin is revealed underneath. At Halcyon Medispa in Marylebone, central London, peels are used for acne and acne marks, uneven tone and pigmentation, rough texture, fine lines and keratosis pilaris, on the face and on the body.
The strength of the peel is not chosen from a menu. Your skin is assessed first, and the depth, the acid and the number of sessions are matched to your skin type and to the concern you want treated. A course of six to eight sessions is typical, and treatment takes about 20 minutes. Peels start from £150.
If your main concern is stubborn facial pigmentation or melasma, the depigmenting Cosmelan treatment is often the more appropriate route, and we will say so at consultation.

Before your peel. Stop retinoids, acids and physical exfoliants for the period we advise, keep the skin well moisturised, and use a high factor sunscreen daily. Sun protection before and after is the single thing that most affects how well a peel settles, and it also reduces the risk of pigment changes afterwards.
On the day. The skin is cleansed and prepared, the solution is applied and left in place for a carefully timed period, then neutralised or removed. Most people feel warmth or mild tingling. The appointment takes around 20 minutes and no anaesthetic is needed.
Afterwards. The skin may look pink and feel tight, and light flaking usually begins within two to three days. Deeper peels involve more visible peeling and a longer settling period, which we will explain fully before you agree to treatment.
Cleanse gently, moisturise often and wear a high factor sunscreen every day while the skin recovers, whatever the weather. Do not pick or pull at flaking skin, and leave retinoids, acids and exfoliating scrubs until we tell you it is safe to restart them. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and heavy exercise for the first 48 hours.
Redness, tightness and peeling are expected. Contact the clinic if you have blistering, spreading heat or pain, or anything that does not settle as we described, and we will see you.
What a peel achieves depends on its depth and on the skin it is working on. After a light or medium peel most people see brighter, smoother skin and a more even tone within about two weeks, as the surface finishes renewing. Acne marks and pigmentation usually improve gradually over a course rather than after a single session, which is why six to eight sessions are commonly advised.
Results are maintained, not permanent. Daily sun protection and a suitable homecare routine are what keep them, and pigmentation in particular can return if skin is left unprotected. Peels also sit well alongside other treatments, and are often combined with a HydraFacial within a wider skin plan.
